The Challenge

Schools and Public Buildings Face Unique Out-of-Hours Risks

Schools house expensive IT equipment, musical instruments, catering equipment and sensitive personal data. Local authority buildings contain cash, controlled documents and assets that attract opportunistic theft. NHS premises hold medication, medical equipment and confidential patient records. All of these buildings are empty for long periods — evenings, weekends, school holidays — making them attractive targets.

An intruder alarm system is only as good as its installation grade, its monitoring and its response. We design insurance-grade systems that actually deter, detect and respond — not just make a noise that nobody acts on.

Complex, Multi-Use BuildingsSchools with out-of-hours lettings, NHS buildings with 24-hour access areas and council offices with different occupancy zones all require flexible alarm zoning that doesn't compromise security when part of the building is in use.
Insurer RequirementsPublic sector buildings often hold assets or data that require professionally installed Grade 2 or Grade 3 systems to satisfy insurer requirements. Non-compliant systems can void insurance cover — leaving the organisation exposed.
False Alarm ManagementExcessive false alarms erode police response and damage relationships with keyholders. We design detection to minimise false alarms without compromising genuine threat detection.
Keyholder and Response ManagementSchools and public buildings change staff regularly. Maintaining an up-to-date keyholder list and ensuring fast, reliable response requires a system that's easy for facilities teams to manage.

Detection, Monitoring and Response — Done Properly

From system design and installation to ARC monitoring and ongoing maintenance, we deliver intruder alarm solutions that satisfy your insurer, protect your assets and give your facilities team confidence.

Intruder Detection System Design & Installation
Core Service · Insurance Grade

Grade 2 and Grade 3 intruder alarm systems designed to BS 8243, professionally designed and installed to BS 8243. We design detection coverage around your specific building — using passive infrared (PIR), dual-technology, microwave and perimeter beam detectors as the environment demands — to achieve reliable detection without excessive false alarms.

  • Grade 2 and Grade 3 systems to BS 8243
  • Passive infrared (PIR), dual-technology and microwave detectors
  • Perimeter detection for early warning at building boundaries
  • Shock and vibration detection for high-risk areas
  • Flexible zone design for part-set during out-of-hours lettings
24/7 ARC Monitoring
Monitoring Service

Connection to our independently approved Alarm Receiving Centre partner for 24/7 monitoring of your alarm system. When a genuine alarm signal is received, the ARC contacts your keyholders and, where agreed, notifies the police — within seconds of activation, any time of day or night.

  • Independently approved ARC with 24/7/365 staffing
  • Keyholder notification within agreed timescales
  • Police response via URN for confirmed activations
  • Detailed activation reports for each incident
Dual-Path Signalling
Resilience Essential

Dual-path signalling uses two independent communication routes — typically broadband and cellular — to transmit alarm signals to the ARC. If an intruder cuts your phone line or broadband connection, the cellular path ensures the alarm signal still gets through.

  • Primary broadband and secondary 4G/5G cellular paths
  • Automatic failover if primary path fails
  • Tamper detection on all communication equipment
  • Required by most insurers for Grade 3 installations
App-Based Management
Modern Control

Modern alarm panels with app-based management allow authorised staff to set, unset and check the status of the alarm system from their smartphone — essential for schools and public buildings with multiple keyholders and frequent out-of-hours access requirements.

  • Set/unset via smartphone app from anywhere
  • Real-time push notifications for alarm events
  • User management — add and remove users without an engineer visit
  • Full activation history and access log
Planned Maintenance & Certification
Ongoing Compliance

Annual planned preventative maintenance visits keep your system in peak condition and produce the compliance certificates your insurer requires. We test every detector, siren, battery and communication path — and provide a full written report after every visit.

  • Annual PPM visits with full system test
  • Insurance compliance certificates issued after each visit
  • Battery replacement programme included
  • Priority fault response with agreed SLAs
BS 8243 — Installation and Configuration of Intruder Alarm Systems
All Fyrfly intruder alarm installations are designed and installed to BS 8243, the British Standard for intruder alarm systems. This is the standard required by most public sector insurers.
PD 6662 — Scheme for Application of European Standards
Grade 2 and Grade 3 alarm systems are installed in accordance with PD 6662, which defines the application of European Standards for alarm systems in the UK context and is required for insurance-compliant installations.
Professionally Documented Installation
Every Fyrfly intruder alarm installation is fully documented — design drawings, zone schedules, commissioning records and handover packs. For public sector organisations, this documentation satisfies insurer requirements and procurement due diligence.
Police Preferred Specification
Our ARC monitoring service operates to the requirements of the police Unique Reference Number (URN) system, meaning confirmed activations can receive a police response — a requirement for many public sector sites.

Why Fyrfly for Intruder Alarms

An Alarm That Works When It Matters Most

Your intruder alarm is the last line of defence when your building is empty. We design systems that detect reliably, signal with certainty and respond without delay.

01
Designed to Minimise False Alarms

False alarms erode police response and exhaust keyholders. We use dual-technology detectors, careful placement and confirmation logic to achieve the lowest possible false alarm rates — without compromising on genuine threat detection.

02
Flexible Zoning for Complex Use

Schools with evening lettings, NHS buildings with 24-hour access and council buildings with mixed tenancies all need alarm systems that can part-set specific zones. We design zoning around your operational patterns, not the other way around.

03
Integrated with CCTV and Access Control

An alarm that triggers your CCTV to record and your monitoring centre to pull up live images is worth significantly more than one that just makes a noise. We design intruder alarms as part of an integrated security ecosystem from the start.
